Taeyang’s cover on his Instagram of two of his all time favorite (YJH, Stevie Wonder) songs is beautifully sung, but putting both together can also be a thoughtful message of comfort for fans struggling with anxieties for the future (especially in this time of global uncertainty.)
Myself Reflected in My Heart – Yoo Jae Ha Translated by 이꽁치
The pieces of my dreams that I can’t hold onto anymore
Are disappearing, one by one
Like someone who is stuck in an endless routine of wandering,
Today I again wander without much purpose
Even though I know I’m living a lie, I don’t let it show on the outside
My true heart is revealed through the sighs that come out when I speak.
Now that I am trying to make up what I’ve missed
My life is such that no one listens or pays much attention
What should I do to fill up this poorly-drawn out, empty life?
I’m going to draw out my true intentions, my true self.
Ribbon in the Sky – Stevie Wonder
This is not a coincidence
And far more than a lucky chance.
But what is that was always meant
Is our ribbon in the sky for our love, love.
We can’t lose with God on our side
We’ll find strength in each tear we cry
From now on it will be you and I
And our ribbon in the sky
Ribbon in the sky
A ribbon in the sky for our love
There’s a ribbon in the sky for our love.
One of YB’s signature styles is the intensity in how he sings that gives a new feel to both songs. I feel that Yoo Jae Ha’s original is more melancholy and thoughtful, but YB’s interpretation in putting both songs together transforms it into a more positive message meant to console and cheer up.
YB’s warm relationship with fans shown time and time again is one reason why I continue to support him after all these years. I am constantly reminded of his concern, sincerity and affection in his interactions. I think he is an exceptionally gifted and talented guy, but giving comfort to fans is something I consider his superpower. Especially in difficult times, I really appreciate his extra effort to reach out and make us feel loved.
