After 13 years with ATY, I can hardly believe that we’re finally witnessing a real comeback after six long years.

Taeyang is back from military service, at a new label, married, and a father. With all the changes he’s experienced, it’s understandable that he would lean towards a more retro sound on this EP. He’s returning to the timeless sounds that inspired him to keep making music, and every song on the EP feels meaningful and reflective of his journey.

Taeyang’s cover on his Instagram of two of his all time favorite (YJH, Stevie Wonder) songs is beautifully sung, but putting both together can also be a thoughtful message of comfort for fans struggling with anxieties for the future (especially in this time of global uncertainty.)

Q1. Hwadap: Donation Flea Market and Auction by Taeyang and Friends is currently in the midst of preparation. This is your first event after your discharge from the military.

A1. When I was in the army I kept thinking about how I should meet my fans for the first time after being discharged. We mostly meet our fans on the stage, but there may not be such an opportunity immediately.  I had many thoughts and concerns and actually came to a realisation in the army.  I think I have too many clothes which are really not necessary.  In the military, you only wear one uniform and battle outfit.  This is already sufficient, and I still felt ‘isn’t that too much?’ Is there a good way to deal with the things I own?  So I thought it would be good to set up a flea market in my name, share good things, and donate the proceeds to a good cause.  At first, I was troubled by how I should meet my fans and this event seemed to match well with the various ideas I had, hence I proceeded to do it.

GQ : I’ve read all of TAEYANG’s [past] interviews with GQ. I noticed that you spoke about your future plans in most them. You said you would fall in love, would do a world tour, and would release a song with just vocals. You accomplished all of them.
T : Right? haha. I was a bit surprised when you mentioned that. I said those things at that time…

On stage Taeyang is captivating, with vocals and a stage presence that exudes confidence and charisma. One of South Korea’s most popular R&B K-pop idols, he’s made his name (and career) as a member of BIGBANG. But that’s only the beginning for the 29-year-old, whose also seen success with his solo releases, though he remains true to his origins.

“All things, to me, go back to being a member of BIGBANG,” the artist tells Billboard.

Decked out in black sweats and Balenciaga high tops, he exuded simplicity in comparison to the flair of his bedazzled and befeathered, primarily white, stage outfits. “I would describe myself as a very plain but very honest person,” he says. “I don’t really hype myself up with fancy things. I do a lot less than other celebrities because I like being honest. I just want the audience to see that the performances are a real representation of myself.”

As Taeyang mentioned, it was a short but intense promo cycle for White Night in Seoul since he had to immediately leave for his White Night North American Tour .  But what a bounty of activities! Did YB even sleep for 3 weeks? His hard work is all for our benefit though since we got a lot of goodies to tide us over for the (extended) future.
