“I’m not really interested in branching out into other fields.”
Unlike the other members who have been busy in various areas other than music, TaeYang was not easy to meet. While the other members were busy branching out into new fields, such as variety shows, TV acting and musical, all he cared about was “music.”
It was so good to see him again and he had some good news for us – he’s working on his second solo album! Although his first single from his first EP enjoyed notable success sweeping the charts, there was obviously much more he wanted to do. He is working hard on his second album both because of his own desire to make a better album and his sense of obligation to his fans.
“I’ve been working with Teddy since early this year to work on the type of music I wanted to make. I hadn’t specifically intended to make songs for my second album but the collaboration naturally turned into one for my second. My first was an EP so it is appropriate that I make a full album this time. As much as I want it to be perfect, I will take time to make it perfect.”
TaeYang spent the time away from his Korean fans reaffirming his identity as a solo artist and focusing on promoting Big Bang’s music as well. In order to expand their presence in Japan, Big Bang released two singles and one full album back to back and stayed there to aggressively promote their albums.
Does that mean Big Bang now has the status of the so-called “Korean Wave” stars? TaeYang humbly shakes his head. “We didn’t go to Japan as Korean Wave stars in the first place. We went there to let more people know about our music as musicians through an independent label. Then we were fortunate enough to sign with a major label and accomplished unintended results as our album went high up on the Oricon charts. The most memorable experience to me was when we went on Music Station, a famous music show in Japan.”
For Big Bang, rest is a luxury and something that is hard to come by. When they accomplish a goal, the next, more difficult goal awaits them. We are worried that they might have been completely exhausted both physically and mentally and whether they have someone to talk to when they need to pour their guts out. “Not so much exhausted as we are mindful about our future directions. We know people’s high expectations of us and I know that I have to do better. Before, when I had concerns, I used to keep them to myself but now I share them with a few people I trust and depend on. I feel most comfortable and comforted when I talk to Teddy.”
However, today TaeYang struggles over a problem even “Teddy-hyung” cannot help him with. He had been so engrossed with recording, he forgot that it was his mummy’s birthday yesterday. “My mother sent me a text message to ask me if I could come home to have dinner. I was too busy to reply. What do I do now?”
Having been such a mature adult throughout the interview, he now has an embarrassed look of a child. He may have to forgo being a good, dutiful son for a while. Anyone who has talked to him even once would know immediately that he is a sunny and healthy young man at heart like the sun. What makes TaeYang the artist he is is his passion for music and he will continue to be a “great musician” as long as he has that.

Lol its so like Tae to feel bad about his mum’s birthday and I like how he liked to share things with Teddy and he selects who he trusts and shares information with….it makes me think though, that maybe somewhere he’s been betrayed by a friend or lost his trust in people…..he’s very cautious about whom he tells what….then again he is particular about his image (thank goodness, I don’t wanna see this boy walking around with a cancer stick in his mouth)…

Hearing this made me smile. I love how dedicated he is, and how much he values his music. I’ve been feeling pretty impatient about his solo album, especially because of the delay, but hearing this, and knowing just how hard he’s trying, I feel like I now WANT him to take his time.
And i “aww-ed” when he said he forgot his mom’s bday. i remember when yb was on a radio show, TOP called, and said how much yb loves and takes care of his mom. such a sweet boy. <3

Thanks Georgie! I must have to say, Youngbae is very tight lipped about his album and pretty much everything. He’s never willing say anything about his album. But it seems like it’s in his personality to “not talk about his feelings” too.

there is a mixture of fans here—some have given up on big bang and are now fully supporting taeyang or they were never fans of bb and only supported taeyang OR fans that still support both (with a ybiased)… although i do still support both i must say their music has been a bit of a disappointment for a bit over a year. anything that they release had seemed very halfassed and mediocre. i know there are trends in music to follow to keep up with the times and to keep your fans interested but i think by following this mainstream trend they have also lost their passion as artists. the boys set the bar high but now i feel as if they havent even attempted to surpass this bar themselves. that quote translated by georgie really made me happy because it really showed his passion in music and the fact that he doesnt want to branch out into other areas of interest makes me really happy too. concentrating on your passion and making it your own is really what makes people notice and appreciate you. even though big bang does have management making decisions for them yb is wise, passionate and strong enough to call his own shots for his own album and to make the music HE wants to make…YAY for us YB fans. so needless to say…CAN’T WAIT FOR HIS ALBUM!!!!..his FULL length album xP

I agree with what you have to say…haha about the fans thing, maybe I should do a poll and see how many are fans in what category…that’d be interesting…anyway, I agree somewhere along the lines I feel they’ve lost their general musical “goal” maybe because they’ve all branched out so much, I feel their music of late has been pretty crappy (especially the Remember album, omo that was horrendous)…but I guess BB is living on the Lie’s hype…I wish they’d do quality over quantity – I would prefer one amazing song over 5 half-assed songs…

Great article! Totally solidifies my thoughts on what music means to him, varitiey shows, and a lot other things. Especially, the part where he doesn’t feel the need to be on variety shows and know what he wants out of his career, and with such passion too! That has no base. We haven’t seen any sources (legitimate or illegitimate actually) saying anything like that. And as you know, just about anyone can edit wikipedia. Don’t take it seriously. (I don’t like the wiki article on him anyways.) And it doesn’t sound like him. He emphasized R&B with almost interview, I doubt it would be euro-beat song title “my body wants to party with you” <<its' a fricken ridiculous title too. Rest assured everyone!

You & Kay have said pretty much how I feel about Big Bang in the past year. I was a fan since the beginning, but fell out of love because their music started to go in the direction I didn’t like too much. Downhills since “Stand Up.” I know most BB fans came after “Lies” but I loved their old stuff. “Remember” was such a mediocre and craptastic album, I pretty much gave up.
And I do believe it’s because they’ve spread themselves thin – doing everything, being everywhere at the same time. Tried to please their fans too much and reamplify the success they had with “Lies.” Lost focus and kind of overlooked the music. Their music were just responsive to the market and trends so it got lost with everything.
So my point is, I’m super happy that Tae Yang is focusing on just the music. I know he expressed his desire to be involved in film, but glad that for the moment it’s music. One of the traits that attracted me to YB was his passion in anything he does (esp music/singing) and it’s great that he continues to carry this passion even after 3 years in the industry and being so famous.
Repeating what so many of his fans have said: Just hoping he keeps it real and true.

I don’t really get this sentence … lol … is he saying he too composed songs for his album, like before, when it was said that Teddy was producing and composing his songs, it was said to be a mini album, but then YB got himself involved making songs so now it’s a full album ?
Or is he simply just saying, he helped Teddy and gave his input into making the songs in his album ?
Either way, my real question that was hidden within my first statement is, can we expect a song that’s ‘Taeyang’ made ?

I think what he meant was that he was just making songs with Teddy; they weren’t intended for his 2nd album, but now, naturally it went for his album. Sooo happy this album was 1.5 years in the making. Quality over quantity.
